Newall Green High School is a specialist arts college in the Wythenshaw Education Action Zone serving one of the most socially and economically challenging areas of the country. We have been working with CAPEUK for some time to address particular aims in our school plan: raising levels of attendance and punctuality, challenging and motivating our most able students, enriching our surroundings, improving links with the community and improving numeracy.

The rock garden forms part of our orchard of soft fruit trees, bushes, plants and herbs, developed through an after-school CAPEUK project by a group of students in consultation with the local community.

The orchard is a teaching tool, supporting Science, Geography, Design Technology, Maths, English, Art and ICT.

The orchard will also become a space for community activities, we plan a sensory trail and the creation of a calm space using what were once local craft skills such as the making of wattle fences and hurdles.

CAPE has had an immense impact on the standards within school, the raising of aspirations, changing lives for our students. The school has no history of pupils staying behind for creative activity, this NOF funded work has enabled us to tap into a stream of creativity in the school, which is really difficult to find in Wythenshaw. As the school is a specialist arts college we had a whole school training day on the arts at the beginning of the year for staff and our feeder primaries. Due to the CAPEUK work taking off, we will be setting up a CAPE room looking at creativity in teaching.
