City of Leeds School attracts pupils from many cultural backgrounds and is host to many refugees and asylum seekers. We are rich in our cultural diversity and this is very evident in school productions. However some of our pupils live in areas that are considered to be amongst the most deprived 10% in England, and we cater for many pupils experiencing behavioural and emotional problems.
We have found artistic activities really engage our pupils and through CAPEUK/NOF projects we have been able to enjoy new experiences and develop new skills. By inviting artists into our community we have been able to motivate people and widen a lot of eyes through after school activities.
As well as The African Project, we have been able to establish a Gospel Choir, run three different music clubs and run Ray’s Street Dance, a stomp project that culminated in a performance at the Royal Armouries Museum. 24% of students receive instrumental tuition: steel pan, drumming, keyboards, guitar, cello, woodwind and a singing group.
