Plant Hill High School
“Mind blowing, I didn’t know what to do at first, sat in the corner, people came and helped me.” - student
Neil Simpson and Joel Monk of the Action Factory in Blackburn began to work with a group of boys who, bored on wet lunchtimes, had brought in a tape/karaoke machine. What started as DJ/Rapping sessions expanded into several groups exploring different forms – Indie, Pop, Ballad – with all getting voice coaching and learning skills in song-writing, singing, music production, music sequencing and performance. The original group were invited to perform at the Bridgewater Hall and since then over fifty students have been able to make and record music, creating an exciting vibrant atmosphere, where students are proud of their achievements.
“Peer mentoring has worked well across the ages, disenchanted students have been motivated and it has increased the profile of music within the school.” - teacher
“Finding performance venues helped improve motivation and concentration, often students who haven’t found anything for them in the curriculum for them, will certainly come to school if they know that afterwards they are looking forward to their creative activity.” - teacher
“It’s helped my confidence in friendships, my confidence in my
music has gone up, and it’s made us not see them as teachers as such,
you can speak to them like normal people.” - student
