“Great for boys to have a male role model belting out I believe I can fly!””

Leeds University Language Department and the West Yorkshire Playhouse approached us, wanting to engage those of us with links to or an interest in Africa. We learnt about African history through storytelling, dance, singing and drumming leading to a performance showcased round Leeds schools and at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. The rehearsal schedule was gruelling and apart from after school rehearsals, we were in every day of the two week holiday.

“They just got it Miss, we got all the right responses in the right places.” - pupil

“It required a great sense of commitment and discipline from our pupils, and then the energy levels required to put on the performances around the City were amazing. We were pleased with the increased confidence particularly the shy Year 7s.” - teacher

“This project could not have happened without the additional staffing of mentors and dance artists.” – co-ordinator
